Sprouting Beans

Grow some beans. We soaked some bean seeds we'd saved last year.
A day later we put napkins in jam jars and soaked it in water.

We added the bean seeds and put them in the airing cupboard to see what happens.

After a few days some of the bean seeds have started to sprout roots and shoots.

Once the seeds sprout, move the jars to a light place. Keep them wet.

Talk about what plants need to grow. Water, air (carbon dioxide), light and nutrients.

After a week or two plant them in pots of soil or compost.

Ask why do you think the beans grow shoots shoots in the dark cupboard.

Putting them in a dark cupboard (with warmth and water) encourages them to seek light and sprout.

We have made a simple robin thumb print Christmas card this weekend. You need: A4 white paper.  Black felt tip pen.  Glue.  A4 Coloured card.  Red paint.  Envelopes.  Gold, silver or white glitter pen.  What to do...  Cut up white A4 paper into six squares.  Draw different robin outlines. The children can then trace the different outlines onto the paper squares or draw their own. Dab thumb into red paint and make a red thumb print for the robin's red breast.  When the paint is dry, glue the square onto folded coloured card.  Write Happy Christmas on the front.  Write message inside.  We stuck some sequin snowflakes on the front.  We love these simple Christmas cards.

Looking for Animal Tracks

Looking for Animal Tracks. We are lucky to live in the countryside and as we live on a farm we have fields to explore. Recently we managed to spot a number of animal tracks.  Next time you go for a walk in the countryside see if you can spot some animal tracks.  In the meantime, why not see if you can identify the animals we spotted from these photographs.  We'd love to know what you think.

Acrostic Poem About Football

An acrostic poem has the word you are writing about down the page so the letter for each sentence spells out the word. We decided to do ours about football, but you could do it about any topic your child is interested in. One day we wrote down lots of words associated with football. Second day we wrote the poem. It was a joint effort. Third day we typed up the poem. We would love to see your poems so please share any you do.
